Annual State CME Requirements for Tennessee
40 total hours every 2 years
✔ 40 AMA Category 1 Credits
✔ 2 Controlled Substance Prescribing
40 Hours of continuing medical education courses must be completed during the two calendar years (January 1 – December 31) that precede the licensure renewal year. At least two of the forty required hours shall be a course designed specifically to address prescribing practices (controlled substances). AMA PRA Category 1 courses acceptable.

Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination CME Requirements
Annual State CME Requirements for Tennessee:
40 total hours every 2 years
✔ 2 Substance Prescribing (DEA registrants only)
✔ 2 Prescribing Practices (Non DEA registrants only).
✔ 40 CME (Any).
If you are a prescriber with a DEA registration, at least 2 of those hours must relate to controlled substance prescribing, which must include instruction in the Department’s treatment guidelines on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and carisoprodol and may include instruction on topics such as medicine addiction, risk management tools and other topics approved by the Board.
If you do not have a DEA registration, at least 2 of the required hours must be in a course or courses designated specifically to address prescribing practices. These 2 hours requirements are not necessary for doctors certified by the ABMS, AOA, or the American Board of Physician Specialties in one or more of the following specialties: pain management, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, and rheumatology.
