High-Yield Pediatric Review Questions

ABP review with ABP-style, blueprint-based Q&A.
Just like you’ll see on the actual ABP exam.

Positively-stated, Case-based Question Stems

No “negatively phrased” questions, no “A and B”…you know what we mean. Our questions always address important “key point” blueprint-based content in a well structured manner.

A 12-month-old infant is admitted for chronic enteritis, failure to thrive, and eczematous lesions over the perioral and perianal regions (see figure).

What is an accurate statement regarding the diagnosis in this child?

Clear Answer Options

A question’s difficulty is defined by the choice of distractors. Good distractors determine the difficulty level of a question. Therefore, good distractors are one of the most important features of a high quality question.

Therapy with acyclovir is indicated.
Treatment with high-dose zinc and close monitoring of levels is indicated.
No therapy is indicated for this infant who likely has Gianotti-Crosti syndrome.
The condition depicted is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern.

High-yield Remediation

Understanding why an answer choice is incorrect is just as important as knowing why it is correct. Med-Challenger questions contain detailed explanations for the correct and incorrect answer choices along with integrated media for those that learn best by visual stimuli.

Explanation:

This infant has inherited zinc deficiency (acrodermatitis enteropathica), which is the reason for this child’s failure to thrive. Acrodermatitis enteropathica is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Treatment involves zinc replacement.

Acyclovir would not be indicated because no evidence suggests herpetic disease. Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, also known as papular acrodermatitis of childhood, is a benign, papular, self-limited exanthem that does not include symptoms of enteritis or failure to thrive. Failure to thrive secondary to celiac disease is associated with a degree of enteritis, but not the rash depicted in the figure.
