A 62-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and a history of leg ulcers infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is admitted 4 days after being diagnosed with influenza.
He has developed a worsening cough with productive sputum and rapidly progressing shortness of breath.
