Covid-19 in Pregnancy
At the onset of the current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, data regarding the treatment of pregnant patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 were completely lacking. This forced national guidelines to initially extrapolate recommendations for the management of SARS-CoV-2 infections in pregnant patients from the data of previous significant coronavirus outbreaks, such as those due to the acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus [SARS-CoV] and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus [MERS-CoV).
First data have now become available regarding SARS-CoV-2 infections in pregnant patients during the current pandemic. This has led to updated recommendations with regards to the management specifically of SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) in pregnant patients.
The Med-Challenger review draws on these new, SARS-CoV-2 specific guidelines from the National Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (published guidelines April 30, 2020), the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC; updated guidelines May 20 through June 30, 2020) and the National Institute for Health (NIH; updated guidelines June 25, 2020) to address the management of pregnant patients during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Topics covered are of interest to any healthcare worker who cares for pregnant patients in emergency, outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care settings.
