Given that COVID-19 specifically attaches to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)...
Question:
How should patients be managed who are admitted for COVID-19 infections and are taking an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)?
Answer Options:
Patients receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) should continue treatment with these agents.
Only ACE inhibitors increase ACE2 receptor density and should be discontinued during active COVID-19 infection. ARBs are safe to continue.
Only ARBs increase ACE2 receptor density and should be discontinued during active COVID-19 infection. ACE inhibitors are safe to continue.
All renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (ACE inhibitors and ARBS) can increase ACE2 levels and should be discontinued.
