Introducing ACGME Milestone Management

Med-Challenger has introduced ACGME Milestone management for resident clinical competency evaluation to its online group education platform. Residency program managers and educators can now easily log achievement of specialty-based ACGME training milestones by learner and group cohort within their Med-Challenger accounts online.

Milestone competency achievement is one of the many processes that must be evaluated, tracked and reported by program directors.

Med-Challenger’s milestone management feature makes this process easy.

About ACGME Milestones

Residency programs have training milestone requirements issued from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

What are ACGME Milestones?

Simply defined, a milestone is a significant point in development. For accreditation purposes, the Milestones are competency-based developmental outcomes (e.g., knowledge, skills, attitudes, and performance) that can be demonstrated progressively by residents/fellows from the beginning of their education through graduation to the unsupervised practice of their specialties.

What is Competency?

“Competency” is an observable ability of a health professional, integrating multiple components such as knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. Since competencies are observable, they can be measured and assessed to ensure their acquisition.

Milestones lay out several levels of competency of the respective training milestone.  High “competency levels” in all milestones required for graduation.

What are Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)?

To assess competency, programs need Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs): EPAs are units of professional practice, defined as tasks or responsibilities that trainees are entrusted to perform unsupervised once they have attained sufficient specific competence. EPAs are independently executable, observable, and measurable in their process and outcome, and, therefore, suitable for entrustment decisions.  Med-Challenger’s online education platform provides a resource for such entrustable activities.
