An 8-year-old boy presents to you with his parents for evaluation of a burn wound on his left upper extremity. He was helping his parents cook over a gas stove when his upper sleeve dragged into the flame and caught fire. His parents extinguished the flame with some difficulty, placed cold compresses on the wound, and brought him for evaluation.

On examination, he appears frightened but is in no acute distress. Vital signs are: temperature 37.1 °C (98.8 °F), heart rate 100 beats/minute, blood pressure 100/60 mm Hg, respiratory rate 18 breaths/minute, and oxygen saturation 99% on room air.

His left upper arm is notable for a 3% total body surface area burn to the ventral surface (see Figure 1).

The wound is insensate, and the erythematous areas do not blanch. Distal capillary refill and pulses are normal.
