ABOG Qualifying / Certifying Exam Features

Qualifying Exam:
The examination consists of single-best answer, multiple-choice questions. Many of the questions are constructed to be thought provoking and problem solving. For most questions, all possible answers may be plausible, but only one answer is the most correct. The Qualifying Examination will only be given in English.

Certifying Exam:
The certifying examination is 3 hours in length equally divided in the areas of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Office Practice and Women’s Health. Communication, ethics and patient safety questions may be included in each of the three (3) major areas. Each hour will be divided into 2 sections of approximately 30 minutes in length. One section will be devoted to questions derived from the candidate’s case list, and the other section will consist of structured and/or simulated cases written by ABOG. The structured cases are used to elicit the candidate’s responses to specific clinical situations. The examination will be conducted in English.

ABOG Qualifying / Certifying Exam Requirements

  • After residency, a physician may seek certification from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • To become Board certified, a physician must pass a written test to demonstrate that he or she has obtained the special knowledge and skills required for medical and surgical care of women.
  • He or she must also show experience in treating women’s health care prior to the oral examination.
  • An oral examination is given by a team of well-respected national experts; the exam tests the physician’s skills, knowledge and ability to treat different conditions. The examiners also review the patients the physician treated during the past year.
